As soon as she arrived home she would kick off her stilettos and disappear into the shower. On her return wearing a silk gown or her pure white bathrobe, the ponytail abandoned, her hair auburn and shining, cascaded over her shoulders, provocative in the light of the apartment, Ted never failed to catch his breath, or consider himself fortunate.

By day she was the frosty executive, suited with uniformity. By night, she was unignorably seductive, challengingly sexual. She persuaded him to photograph her. While I’m still young, she explained, knowing beauty is fleeting. With her robe enticingly open, mouth wide, eyes huge and oddly disturbing, she straddled a chair, pouting suggestively. Draped over a sofa, static with passion, she would mimic Monroe, running her tongue over her teeth, as though tasting blood.

Frustratingly, the sex that followed was always disappointing. In his arms, naked, she was strangely neutralized, her power weakened. Before the camera, something emerged that belonged to no one but her. Her hair, in one frame, flies up into fiery points, the expression on her face animal, devouring.

Eventually, Ted couldn’t touch her at all, but settled for directing Marlene's unashamed self-abandonment for the camera; the sensual parade delighted them both and with time a growing portfolio of exotic poses inevitably made its way onto the net, where they were seen by a German collector of erotica. A billionaire, he saw potential in Marlene's photos,
financing a film opposite an aging but still bankable male lead. The movie became an art house favorite among the indie crowd, an instant cult classic of lustful female power.

Ted and Marlene eventually divorced, but remained excellent business partners, amassing a media empire that now spans the globe.

Ted Winters was a milkman, 5’5” or so. Twenty-six, with bags under his eyes and hollow cheeks, maybe 130 pounds. He was shy, but unembarrassed as he stood in front of the reception desk inside the door of my eleventh floor office and asked to see me, then a 22 year old manager of First National Credit Bureau, recently promoted from the smaller, ailing Muskegon branch where I had managed to show a few monthly profits for the first time in years. Training a new collector, a Viet Nam vet, I had left an “urgent” message at Ted’s new job delivering milk for Coulder’s Dairy.

Winters had come to town about $52 owed on his wife’s doctor bill. Ted was very angry with me - I used my real name but allowed desk names for the collectors - for telling Coulder's bookkeeper about the bill and asking when Ted got paid next as our office was filing a wage garnishment on behalf of the doctor.

“May I help you?” The receptionist was instructed to be polite, but not smile at visitors unless she recognized them as Home Office in from Detroit. I sat behind the cigarette-burned and scarred blonde desk, veteran of a thousand collection interviews. Winters stared at me from his side. We were jammed into a tiny cubicle. Past me, Winters saw most of what passed for Kalamazoo’s downtown high-rise buildings in the middle sixties.

“Big shot.” said Ted, “Crummiest job in the world and you think you're a big deal.” His thought was interrupted by me rapping the desktop with my knuckles,

“Hello? Mr. Winters? I hope you’ve come to pay off this balance in full. I can’t accept any more of your broken promises. That’s $52.90, including interest to date. I need it in cash as well. Did you come here today with $52.90?”

Ted's face went bright red and immediately to sheet white, like water circling a drain, “How would you like a fist in the mouth, Big Shot?”

Standing up, I tossed the file on the desk, "Come on!"

Inches shorter and 30 pounds lighter, Winters leaned against the desk, then hopped over it, grabbing me in a bear hug, and pushing us both hard against the window overlooking the newly-opened pedestrian mall eleven floors below. The plate glass flexed as I struggled to get one arm free and grab the window frame. Up on his toes, Ted kept pushing us, rocking the glass. Time slogged to a near stop. The new collector dashed from the adjacent cubicle, pulled Winters’ left arm, forcing it backwards and up. Ted yelped and immediately relaxed, defeated. Because I had just learned nothing, there was no acceptance of splattered death for us before, during or after the incident. I had been lucky, no more. Hell, I was 22, immortal.

Contact your Senators today!

While we continue to work to preserve federal funding for bicycling and walking, there is an opportunity this week to ensure that federally funded transportation projects accommodate the needs and safety of all users—including pedestrians and bicyclists. This would be a real chance to see Complete Streets policies enacted in every state.

On Wednesday morning, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation will consider an amendment offered by Alaska Senator Mark Begich to provide safe and adequate accommodations for all users in all federally-funded street projects. This means safer roads for everyone, including those who walk, bicycle, ride transit, or drive cars.

We need you to voice your support TODAY for the Senator Begich amendment to S. 1950 on "safety for motorized and nonmotorized users." If your Senator is on the Commerce Committee, you will see a letter asking them to vote for the Begich amendment. If your Senator is not a member of the Commerce Committee, you will instead see a letter asking them to cosponsor Complete Streets legislation.

This is the first time in over six years that our federal representatives will take a vote on Complete Streets language—take action now!

Dried swirls of burgundy on the wine glass, sunlight from the wide window glittering from an edge on the stemware lip as she made her entrance, just then looking none the worse for wear, a blessing of youth to hide damage until it shows on the face, especially around the eyes, but this morning, a perfect smile, punctuated by a seagull's caw swooping across the screened patio overlooking the sea. Sleepy voice, rubbing the crystal blue eyes under the brown shoulder length hair somehow lovely while totally disheveled, "I'm jealous."
"Of what, sweet pea? And good morning!"
"I'm jealous of you not in bed with me, out here enjoying the morning without me, I'm jealous of the time we didn't have together before this, I'm jeal... hey!"
Reaching into my past's bag of tricks, I stood and scooped her into my arms, turned and walked briskly back into the bedroom, the big-bladed ceiling fan slowly turning the only witness to our leisurely self examination that lasted until the coffee maker by the bed sighed and shut off.

I've heard of salmon jumping into boats but . . Four were pulled from the icy waters of Stephens Passage, Alaska , by a group of locals on Tom Satre's 62-foot charter vessel. Four juvenile Sitka black- tailed deer swam directly toward the boat.

.

Once the deer reached the boat, the four began to circle the boat, looking
directly at the humans on board.. Clearly, the bucks were distressed. With
help, the typically skittish and absolutely wild animals came willingly onto
the boat. Once onboard, they collapsed with exhaustion, shivering.

Here the rescued bucks rest on the back of Tom Satre's boat, the Alaska
Quest. All four deer were transported to Taku Harbour . Once the group
reached the dock, the first buck that had been pulled from the water hopped
onto the dock, looked back, then leapt into the harbour, swam to shore, and
disappeared into the forest. After a bit of prodding and assistance from the
humans, two others followed suit, but one deer needed more help.

Here he is being transported by Tom Satre:
Tom, Anna and Tim Satre help the last of the "button" bucks to its feet.
They did not know how long the deer had been in the icy waters or if there had been others who did not survive. The good Samaritans (humans) describe their experience as "one of those defining moments in life." I'm sure it was for the deer, as well.

I stood on the porch and looked around the neighborhood, nobody on the street, everybody at work: I work at home, and travel for my job, doing reviews for a book on small town restaurants competing against the franchises.

Dizzy from disbelief, I wanted a drink, so I started to make it in a glass with ice, but ended up chugging half a bottle of red left over from dinner: Simon left two months ago, said it was all my travel and the whole not being able to have kids issue, the jerk.

I looked again, the house next to ours was still gone, and the one on the other side was now doing the same thing, flickering, shimmering, poof! I opened another bottle of red in the kitchen that still has no cabinet doors because Simon never put them back on after he spray painted them, badly. I felt a glow behind me, saw it reflected in the toaster. Everything shimmered and and then poof!

So here I am, floating in a tin can, sang Bowie, and I hope this message reaches someone back on Earth, not that anything can be done. Weird, the appliances still work. Nice view from the kitchen window, stars and blackness and oh, there's another house from the block appearing. Ha! Seems the whole neighborhood is being shipped up here like the pieces of a puzzle, like a message in a bottle, message in a ...where's that last bottle of red, I ... lo batt lo batt..

Ingles Green Bags Get Light-fingered Lift of Approval

Aside from being eco-friendly, Ingles' one dollar green canvas shopping bags are way more convenient in getting your groceries from the store to your fridge, with no trip to the dump or recycling station hauling .18 metric tons of plastic we accumulate in seemingly a few weeks.

The first rule of adapting to this new and kinder food transport system is always remember to bring them into the store from the car.

2. Always bring in more bags than you think you will need. It's the same as the rule about not shopping hungry; because if you shop hungry, you're likely to shop angry and next thing you know, you're handcuffed and perp walking to the cruiser for pepper spraying an aisle blocker into a coma.

So I'm shopping for a 'few items', milk, butter, 20 pounds of bird (squirrel) seed, and I have my three green bags on the bottom rack of my cart (which, btw, carts now come in three sizes, I did not know that.) Wandering through the checkout with what turns out to be three bags full of stuff, I reach down to hand Kim the cashier my bags, and find they are gone. I ask the bag boy, Bob, did you get my green sacks? No, Bob shakes his head like a teen accustomed to being accused of mindless crap, which I took for a no. Kim, gauged me correctly, "Bob did it. He's always taking stuff." Bob nodded in agreement. A well-rehearsed team these two.

Added three new canvas bags to my other loot and made it safely back to the parking lot with about a dozen plastic bags,

Bob and Kim work at Ingles under different names.

"What's the name of the nursing home? Who's the attorney handling her estate? Did you bake this pie here? It's incredible!"

"You're not from here, are you, mister? Up North? Some big firm from Atlanta, right? Look, take a tip, cool your jets, Maverick, you'll live longer."

He stopped looking around the diner/service station/bait store, as if waiting for the appearance of the Mother Ship and stared at the waitress, who had Kelly hand printed on her name tag and a friendly smile to balm the sting of her words. It worked, he hung his head,

"Uh, Kelly? I am sorry, it's just that I have a 5:40 flight out of Hartsfield and a good 6 hour drive to get there, turn in the rental and find my gate, please excuse my rudeness, I do need to see her in person and tape a brief interview. If you can help me get there, I would be eternally grateful. And it will help Bunny get back in charge of her life."

"Well, in that case, why didn't you say so in the first place? She's my momma."

The nearly imperceptible break in his lifeline on his left palm told the tale, a visible reminder of how close to fatal laying the motorcycle down in expressway traffic had been. Sherry, the club's bookkeeper, read palms, and whispered, "Man, you nearly iced yourself, didn't you?" while Bill, running the front that week closed and locked the doors, waving at the patrol car as it idled by.

Several employees were certified night owls and took over the chairs at the bar, laughing and talking tables, squawking about big and no tippers, the little kitchen fire that smoked enough to have set off the ceiling detector if Mac the chef hadn't quickly removed the battery; Friday night customers don't want to know there's a fire in the kitchen, besides, it was quickly extinguished.

Somebody asked about Lenny, who had tragically neglected his diabetes, dead at 27. A great member of the family of long time staffers, Lenny had been a talented artist doing complex ink drawings of immense detail. Maryellen wasnot pregnant anymore, Jane would be back from rehab next week, the police released the owner's coked up girl friend to him after a big bail had been paid.

An over-poured regular had teased new server Bunny throughout the long dinner and longer post-prandial drinking. Since he was a big tipper, and Bunny was not yet her best at pouring wine, she had been given shoulder pats and hugs from her co-workers and sent back into battle. By evening's end, she had given him the-my-eyes-are-up-here gesture with two forked fingers extended near the creep's face to draw his stare away from her boobs, gotten thumbs up all around, and Big Spender gave her his best tip ever, a crisp 100 dollar bill. As he and his guests left, he waved at Bunny, and she shot him the up-here sign once more; he laughed,

"See you next week!"

Her nipple remained taut against his finger tip as their tongues returned to respective mouths; the kiss ended, he released her. Her eyes fluttered twice and she sagged suddenly, her knees spreading... nothing, dear. Working on a story...uh, it's called The Time Traveler's Wife.. no, not another Mongo, trying not to mimic her comical disbelief, as when he swore to quit Facebrick for the last time, and her laughter flowed over him, warm and intimate, no inner gotcha' happening, always know when mama ain't happy.

Precisely why I trust her praise and tolerance, as we have a clear understanding: we are two halves of the same walnut, and beyond the odd resemblance to human brain matter, the connection is slipping the bra off her shoulders as she nibbles my ear lobe, not as arousal method, but because she knows I will succumb to tickling her back. She is strong, my queen, and these contests of her nibbling while I tickle her are fierce and can continue until we are winded and I have to lie on top of her until we catch our breath.

Burning Boy

At nine, a playmate, whose family lived next door to us, was misbehaving with me and some gasoline mixed with straw and matches. He lit some straw and let it fall into the open bucket. The whomp was loud, amplified by the metal sides, and became a whoosh as the flames climbed out of the bucket seeking air for fuel. A sudden breeze blew the flames over the small frame, and he ran in terror, fanning the fire, enveloping his body from hair to feet. He died in the hospital three days later.

It was a small town, I was in fourth grade, mom said years later, "We probably should have moved right away, but Dad had to find a new job first, in another state." So I finished fifth grade in that school, Lincoln Elementary. To seemingly balance things out a bit, that was the year my sci-fi playlet got my picture and an interview in the paper. And the way was shown to me then: on the radio performing one of my stories with some classmates. Live radio, music cues, narrator, sound effects. Suddenly the future looked doable.

No one discussed this matter, I never talked to anyone about it, but at school, I felt unwelcome attention. I had vivid dreams in which I injured another classmate, a girl. I came to the hospital to apologize, she said, "You didn't to anything.... to ME."

When fears of being arrested and going to the electric chair abated, and the kids at school started ignoring me again, the dreams decreased and then we moved.

No one ever heard this story until I was an adult; once, blurting it out one whiskey evening, my companion proclaimed it a real bummer for me and gazed about the room.

I was almost 60 when it came out of hiding, gave me a hideous clear flashback of details never thought of since the fire, and since then it is only a bad memory. Half a century in denial and so glad to be free at last.

Whatever bad happens to us is usually nothing compared to what we do to ourselves. And that is why therapy is good, possibly the same result, but way quicker than 50 years.

Once in love with Amie
Not that Amy, the Amie with whom you keep falling in and out of love. The Pure Prairie League song, written by 17 year old Craig Fuller, and recorded years later with his Cincinnati band mates, has never gone off the radio/XM/Serius. In 1971, I was a beginning believer in The Dream, but old enough to be 10% realistic, so going to New York or California was out, Nashville was emerging as a market for songwriters, but not for me at this time, that would be later.
A friend who knew Craig as a boy introduced us, and by that I mean we went to his place overlooking the Ohio River and downtown Cincinnati one fine Spring day before I left for Denver in '72 - my designated Mecca. We exchanged a few pleasantries and probably to stop me raving about Amie, Craig picked up his Martin, sat on the couch and said, "What do you want to sing?"
"Ten Degrees and Getting Colder?" I mentioned a Gordon Lightfoot song I had recently learned, and he strummed a chord and started singing it almost at once in that unique high, lonesome voice. A church choir singer at 10, a harmony fell out of me quite easily, and we did the whole song. I don't believe to this day that I ever sang better harmony, especially off the top of my head. We finished the tune, even holding the last note and stopping together; it was clear as a bell I was with a great talent.
After a moment, he said, "Well, I think we got that one down."
The rest is foggy, but only because I was so elated at such a rare chance to perform with a role model. As for Amie, it might be time to finally learn that classic. Nice thing about popular song, good ones don't get forgotten, they get better.
